Massive Increase in Pak-Afghan Trade as Taliban Takes Control
Contrary to expectations of a decline in Pak-Afghan trade and transit traders as a result of the unstable situation in Afghanistan, traffic on both sides of the Torkham border grew dramatically as cargo trucks continued to cross the border.

Contrary to fears and predictions, according to Customs Clearance Agent Fazlullah, who works at the Torkham border, bilateral trade has increased dramatically.
Fazlullah stated that prior to the Taliban taking control of the largest border crossing between Pakistan and Afghanistan, the number of imports in 24 hours did not exceed 60 to 70 vehicles because the former Afghan government agencies did not want better trade relations between the two countries. However, as many as 270 cargo trucks were cleared within 24 hours of the Taliban taking control of the border crossing.
The Taliban have slashed customs charges on 159 items in Afghanistan, the majority of which are food products, resulting in a 50 to 90 percent decrease in prices.

According to Afghan merchant Hekmatullah, the drop in customs taxes will lower the prices of food goods as well as other items, such as building materials and electronic equipment, that were overpriced due to the high customs duty.
However, he stated that, despite a favorable economic environment providing more employment prospects, neither the traders nor the general public will gain from such pronouncements.
