Asian Development Bank Okays $5M for Kurram Tangi Water Project
The Asian Development Bank has authorized $5 million for the Kurram Tangi Integrated Water Resources Development Project’s “project preparedness funding.”
The PRF is intended for safeguard assessments and document preparation for ADB and government clearance of the project.
The PRF will comprise an updated land acquisition and resettlement plan, environmental impact assessment, financial and economic analysis, and gender action plan, according to an ADB document.
According to the paper, the project was a priority for the government and was in line with the ADB’s Strategy 2030, which addresses poverty and inequality, climate change and disaster risk management, rural development and food security, and increasing governance and institutional capacity.

It added that the initiative was intended for the construction of a 95-meter-tall dam on the Kurram River with a water storage capacity of 1,480 million cubic meters; the construction of three small hydroelectric powerhouses to generate 65MW of hydro power; the irrigation of 27,400 hectares of new command area; and the improvement of irrigation water supply to the existing 154,444 hectares of command area.
