Pakistan and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have signed agreements for two major development projects, officials confirmed on Thursday.
According to a spokesperson from the Economic Affairs Division, ADB will provide a total of $730 million to Pakistan for key development initiatives. This includes a $330 million Second Power Transmission Project and a $400 million reform-focused transformation program.
The power transmission project aims to strengthen Pakistan’s electricity network and enable the transmission of 2,300 megawatts of hydropower to the national grid. Officials said the project will help improve energy reliability and reduce transmission constraints.
Meanwhile, the $400 million transformation program is designed to support the effective implementation of the State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Act and related governance policies. The initiative seeks to improve transparency, efficiency, and financial discipline in state-owned entities.
ADB Country Director Ema Fan praised the Government of Pakistan for its strong commitment to reform, highlighting proactive measures to enhance energy infrastructure and strengthen institutional governance.
Officials said the agreements mark an important step toward improving Pakistan’s power sector performance and advancing long-term economic and governance reforms.
