Pakistan Appointed First Female Supreme Court Judge
Justice Ayesha Malik is expected to become the first woman in Pakistan’s history to be elevated to the Supreme Court. Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed has suggested her as a candidate.

Justice Malik has served as a judge of the Lahore High Court since March 27, 2012. She obtained her BCom from the Government College of Commerce and Economics in Karachi and studied law at the Pakistan College of Law in Lahore, according to her profile on the Lahore High Court’s website. She then attended Harvard Law School, where she received her LLM and was named a London H. Gammon Fellow in 1999-2000.
The mother of three formerly represented nonprofit organizations focusing on poverty alleviation, microfinance, and skills training programs pro bono. Pakistan was the only country in South Asia that did not appoint a woman to the Supreme Court.

Pakistan’s Human Rights Commission noted in a report that only 5.3% of the nation’s judges are female. This represents the lowest number in South Asia.
Pakistan appointed Khalida Rashid Khan as its first female judge in 1974. In 1994, she was elevated to the high court after serving as an anti-corruption judge.
