AI Discovers New Planet Outside Our Solar System

A team from the University of Georgia discovered evidence through artificial intelligence about an undiscovered planet outside of our Solar system.

 Recently, the whole team demonstrated that machine learning could accurately predict the presence of an exoplanet by scanning protoplanetary discs and the gas around freshly formed stars.

The recently released discoveries are essential in applying machine learning to detect exoplanets that had previously gone unnoticed.

Jason Terry, who is a doctoral student in the UGA Franklin College of Arts and Sciences Department of Physics and Astronomy and the stud’s lead author, said, “We confirmed the planet using traditional techniques, but our models directed us to run those simulations and showed us exactly where the planet might be.”

It demonstrates that artificial intelligence may extend researchers’ accuracy and more effectively use their time in such a large-scale project as investigating deep space.

The models could find signals in data that had already been studied; they studied that had gone unnoticed before.
