An Ancient University Discovered in the Mountains of AJK
In the picturesque mountains 221 kilometers (137 miles) from Muzaffarabad, the capital of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, is a historic learning institute (AJK).

The steep and treacherous stone slab stairs lead to a large courtyard on the borders of the beautiful Narda Mountain, which once held a university and a magnificent library, similar to Taxila near Islamabad and Nalanda in India’s northeastern province of Bihar.
According to a source, the chair of the Fine and Arts Department at Azad Jammu and Kashmir University Muzaffarabad, the location was primarily considered by Buddhists as a place of learning until it was converted into a Hindu temple.
According to Khawaja Abdul Ghani, a local historian and author, the place of worship was renovated in the 19th century by the Hindu Dogra kings of undivided Jammu and Kashmir.
A 9-foot-wide staircase with 63 steep stone steps on either side and a huge handrail that is also in ruins leads to the main structure.

Ghani removed his shoes before approaching the supposedly Shankaracharya-built shrine constructed of stone. The sanctum sanctorum has been reduced to a small, roofless area.
