Apple is reportedly preparing a major overhaul of Apple’s virtual assistant, turning Siri into an AI-powered chatbot similar to ChatGPT.
According to a report by Bloomberg, the revamped Siri could be unveiled as early as June at Apple’s annual developers conference. Citing sources familiar with the matter, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman said Apple is developing a new version of Siri that works as a full-fledged AI chatbot, supporting both voice and text-based conversations.
The project is internally codenamed “Campos” and is expected to be integrated into iOS 27, making it one of Apple’s most significant software changes in recent years. Sources suggest the updated Siri may take center stage at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, WWDC, marking the company’s formal entry into the AI chatbot space.
Such a move would place Apple in more direct competition with established AI players, including OpenAI and Google, both of which already offer advanced conversational AI products. In the past, Apple’s senior vice president Craig Federighi had downplayed the idea of Siri becoming a chatbot, instead favoring AI features that work quietly in the background. However, the report indicates Apple’s stance has evolved amid rapid industry shifts.
The growing pressure is partly linked to reports that OpenAI is exploring hardware products, an effort said to involve Jony Ive, Apple’s former chief design officer. This has reportedly heightened concerns within Apple about staying competitive in consumer technology.
Bloomberg also noted that Apple has struggled to keep pace in the AI race. The company delayed plans for a more personalized Siri multiple times and spent much of last year evaluating AI models from several firms before ultimately choosing Gemini as its AI partner, a move confirmed earlier this month.
If Apple proceeds with a chatbot-style Siri, it would represent a major shift in strategy and could significantly change how users interact with Apple devices. The upcoming WWDC is expected to provide clearer insight into whether Apple can close the gap with its AI rivals and reposition Siri as a serious contender in the fast-evolving AI landscape.
