In a landmark decision, the federal cabinet has approved Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s proposal to promote Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir to the prestigious rank of field marshal, recognizing his leadership during Pakistan’s recent victory in the Marka-e-Haq conflict with India on May 6–7.
The promotion, a rare honour in Pakistan’s military history, comes after what officials called an unprovoked Indian attack, which led to civilian casualties. General Munir was praised for his strategic coordination and bravery, unifying all branches of the armed forces and defending the country’s sovereignty.
During the meeting, chaired by the prime minister, the cabinet also extended the tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu, applauding his role in the successful defence operation.
Other major highlights from the meeting:
- National honours will be awarded to personnel involved in Operation Bunyan-un-Marsous, including officers, soldiers, martyrs, and contributors from other sectors.
- The cabinet commended the Pakistani media for fostering unity during the crisis.
- Prime Minister Sharif also briefed ministers on the post-war security and economic outlook.
Officials stated that the military’s decisive response has boosted both national morale and Pakistan’s international standing.
