Pakistani researchers who want to build an international academic career have received a major opportunity as Austria has announced the prestigious FWF ASTRA Awards, a fully funded research program open to scholars from Pakistan and other countries.
The program is launched by the Austrian Science Fund and is aimed at advanced postdoctoral researchers who are ready to work independently and move toward leadership roles in academia. The initiative supports long-term research projects and helps scholars establish a strong academic position within Austria’s research system.
Researchers from Pakistan can apply from a wide range of academic fields. These include natural sciences and engineering, medical and health sciences, social sciences and humanities, as well as arts-based and creative research. The broad eligibility allows scholars from diverse backgrounds to take part in the program.

Under the ASTRA Awards, selected researchers will receive funding ranging from 500,000 to 1,000,000 euros. The research projects can run for up to five years, offering long-term stability and strong support for career growth. The program also focuses on academic independence and provides international recognition through integration into Austria’s research institutions. Women researchers are especially encouraged to apply, with half of the awards reserved for them, along with additional career and family-related support.
To be eligible, Pakistani applicants must hold a PhD awarded between two and nine years ago, with flexibility for career breaks. Applicants should have experience in independent and international research and must not hold a permanent senior academic position. A key requirement is securing a host institution in Austria, such as a university or research center, where the project will be carried out.
The application process involves identifying an Austrian host institution, preparing a strong and original research proposal, and submitting the application through the FWF online portal during the official call period. Shortlisted candidates are invited to present their work before an international jury, after which final approvals are granted by the FWF Scientific Board.
Experts say the ASTRA Awards provide Pakistani researchers with a rare chance to access world-class funding, gain valuable European research exposure, and build long-term academic careers. The initiative is being seen as a positive step for Pakistan’s research community and a strong pathway toward global academic collaboration.
