The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has launched an investigation against businesses that produce inferior skin-whitening products that have been shown to contain hazardous amounts of mercury.
The commission claims that a number of well-known companies include prohibited mercury in their goods without mentioning it in their labeling or marketing. Because of its detrimental impact on human health, mercury in cosmetics is illegal in many countries.
Mercury can harm the kidneys, skin, and nervous system. The chemical is still used in whitening creams marketed under deceptive names like “fairness” and “lightening,” despite its known risks.
According to the applicable law, selling or promoting dangerous creams can result in a fine of up to Rs70 million.
