Azerbaijan and Armenia have signed a peace agreement at the White House, brokered by former US President Donald Trump, in a bid to end decades of conflict.

The deal includes plans for a new transport corridor, increased trade, and economic cooperation, with American companies expected to lead major infrastructure projects. Trump called it a “historic day for peace and prosperity” and said the route will be named the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity.” The US will hold exclusive development rights for the corridor.

Economic opportunities and security changes
Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev welcomed the end of long-standing US restrictions on security cooperation with his country, while Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan joined in expressing hope for lasting peace.

Unresolved tensions over Nagorno-Karabakh
The agreement comes less than two years after Azerbaijan’s military reclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh, forcing tens of thousands of Armenians to flee. Rights groups accuse Azerbaijan of committing abuses during the campaign. Critics say the deal ignores these grievances and was reached under pressure.

Analysts warn that while the accord could boost the economy and reduce tensions, true stability will depend on addressing deep mistrust and past injustices.
