Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Friday paid tribute to former prime minister Benazir Bhutto on her 18th death anniversary, calling her sacrifice a permanent pledge for democracy in Pakistan.

In his message, the former foreign minister said December 27 remains a day of collective mourning and renewed resolve for the nation. He described Benazir Bhutto as the fearless voice of democracy and a source of hope for oppressed segments of society.

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said Benazir Bhutto stood firm against dictatorship, extremism, and intolerance, and her vision of a peaceful, democratic, and dignified Pakistan continues to guide women and youth across the country. He added that despite facing immense challenges during her time in office, she pursued people-friendly policies, strengthened national defence, and protected Pakistan’s sovereignty.

He said Benazir Bhutto restored Pakistan’s progressive image internationally and remained committed to the democratic struggle until her martyrdom. He reaffirmed that the PPP would continue striving for social and economic justice and the supremacy of the Constitution and Parliament.

President Asif Ali Zardari also paid tribute, saying Benazir Bhutto believed true accountability lies in democracy. He said her life and sacrifice are inseparable from Pakistan’s democratic struggle and recalled her role as the first woman prime minister of the Muslim world.

The president said Benazir Bhutto consistently fought for constitutional rule, parliamentary supremacy, and the right to vote. He noted her efforts for farmers, labourers, women, minorities, and young people, adding that her stand against extremism and intolerance remains among her lasting contributions.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also honoured Benazir Bhutto, calling her the great daughter of Pakistan who waged an unmatched struggle for democracy and public rights. He said she promoted tolerance, harmony, and women’s empowerment, and worked to protect minority rights.

The prime minister said her political legacy reflects patriotism and commitment to democratic values, adding that her services will always be remembered. He said Pakistan would continue moving forward on the path of tolerance, rule of law, and public welfare.

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also paid tribute, calling Benazir Bhutto a symbol of resilience, hope, and unwavering belief in the power of the people. He said her national and political services would remain alive in Pakistan’s history.
