In honor of the legendary vehicle from the 2005 video game Need for Speed: Most Wanted, BMW has revealed a customized M3 GTR race car. The blue-and-silver livery that made the M3 GTR unique in the game is replicated in this reproduction, built from an E46-era M3. In addition to being a showpiece, this limited edition features the racing heritage of the actual #42 Team BMW Motorsport M3 GTR from the 2001 ALMS GT Series.

The game’s M3 GTR race car is nearly identical to the customized version. It has a stripped interior, a single racing seat, and a full roll cage to provide a true racing experience. The car has a big, fixed rear wing, wide fenders, and a side-exit exhaust to enhance its motorsport-ready appearance further.
BMW created this limited-edition vehicle to mark two impending anniversaries: the 20th anniversary of Need for Speed: Most Wanted and the 30th anniversary of the original Need for Speed game. Fans can see the vehicle until January 6, 2025, when it is exhibited at the BMW Welt Museum in Munich.
It follows the 2001 ALMS GT Series E46 M3 GTR tradition and is more than just a video game clone. Jörg Müller and J.J. Lehto drove this model, and the team won a championship. Müller also won the driver’s championship that year.
In addition to celebrating BMW’s racing history, this tribute to Need for Speed also honors the video game franchise’s enduring influence. Game and brand enthusiasts can see the M3 GTR at the BMW Welt Museum through early 2025.
