According to a statement from Brazil’s Federal Highway Police, a bus accident in the northeastern state of Pernambuco on Friday night claimed the lives of at least 15 people after the driver lost control of the vehicle.
The driver lost control of the bus just before 8 p.m., swerved into the other lane, hit some rocks on the roadway, then crashed into a sand embankment and overturned the bus. The Federal Highway Police say they are investigating the accident’s causes.
According to the list that authorities were able to acquire, there were thirty passengers on board; eleven women and four men are among the half that have been confirmed deceased thus far. It is yet unknown how many people were hurt in total.
The driver was slightly hurt. According to the statement, he had a breathalyzer test, and the results were normal.
According to the police, there are hints that some of the passengers could not have been using seat belts when the collision occurred.
