The Government of Sindh has issued a formal notice to a cafe for allegedly conducting unauthorized commercial activities on the premises of the Sindh Provincial Museum.
According to the notice issued by the Culture Tourism and Antiquities Department Sindh, a video circulating on social media from the cafe’s account showed the museum’s front lawn being offered for commercial bookings, including Iftar parties and dinner events.
The bookings were reportedly being arranged through a manager identified as Hubdar Ali. Screenshots of the video footage were attached with the official notice.
The department clarified that the space had originally been allotted only to facilitate artists, writers, and literary figures in organizing cultural and literary gatherings intended to promote arts and literature. Authorities said the allocation was never meant for commercial exploitation, private bookings, or profit-driven events.
Officials emphasized that the museum’s front lawn is prime public property owned by the Government of Sindh. They noted that if the area were rented at market commercial rates, the amount would be significant. Despite this, the government is currently covering all utilities including electricity, water charges, and maintenance costs.
The department also stated that recent cleaning and restoration of the premises after events had been carried out by museum staff at government expense, placing additional pressure on public resources.
Describing the activity as misuse of government property and a violation of the original understanding under which the space was provided, the department warned that continuation of such activities could lead to action under applicable rules, including recovery proceedings.
The cafe has been directed to immediately stop advertising, booking, or using the museum premises for commercial purposes such as Iftar or dinner events and private gatherings.
The notice was issued by Zulfiqar Ali Panhwar, Director of the Sindh Provincial Museum in Hyderabad, with copies sent to the Secretary of the Culture, Tourism and Antiquities Department and the Director General of Culture Sindh in Karachi. Officials said the action was taken after writers’ cafe representatives were seen promoting Iftar parties on social media during the holy month of Ramadan.
