Calendar of Important Islamic Dates
Islamabad: Muslims around the world follow a lunar calendar, which means that the dates of Islamic events can vary between different sources. The lunar calendar is approximately 10-11 days ahead of the solar calendar each year. It’s important to note that in the Islamic calendar, dates begin at sunset.
The Islamic calendar, also known as the Hijri calendar, originated when Prophet Muhammad migrated from Mecca to Medina in the year 622 C.E. However, some communities may observe the actual dates based on the sighting of the new moon, leading to slight variations.

The Hijri calendar consists of 12 months determined by the phases of the moon. Since 12 lunar months only add up to approximately 354.36 days (12 x 29.53), there is a difference of around 11 days annually between the Islamic calendar and the Gregorian calendar.
Here are some significant religious holidays observed according to the Islamic calendar:
- Ramadan: The ninth month of the Islamic calendar, known as the month of fasting.
- Eid ul-Fitr: A festival celebrated at the end of Ramadan, marking the breaking of the fast.
- Hajj: The annual pilgrimage to Mecca.
- Eid ul-Adha: The Festival of the sacrifice, commemorating Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son.
- Islamic New Year: The first day of Muharram, marking the beginning of the Islamic year.
- Ashura: The tenth day of Muharram, observed for various significant events in Islamic history.
- Milad an-Nabi: The anniversary of the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Please note that specific dates for these events may vary due to the factors mentioned earlier.
