CDA Makes Rainwater Harvesting Compulsory in Housing Units
ISLAMABAD: By requiring that all housing units build recharge wells for rainwater collecting, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has made a substantial contribution to sustainable water management.
The plan to carry out this project has received official approval, and the CDA is dedicated to seeing that it is fully complied with.
The choice, according to the specifics, was made at a board meeting in March while the idea to require the installation of recharge wells for rainwater collecting in every housing unit was being debated.
The concept was favourably received by meeting attendees, who emphasised the value of having tiny wells and rainwater harvesting tanks in each home to replenish groundwater.

Additionally, the well and tank for recharging water must be included in any building map that is approved.
The plan was presented to the CDA’s building control section and came from the water management wing.
The proposal’s main goal is to use recharge wells to slow the groundwater table’s annual depletion rate of at least four feet.
Additionally, the CDA has previously built 70 underground wells, which have been successful in recharging the underground water table, in a variety of settings, including public parks.
The CDA can only supply 90 million gallons per day (mg/d) of water to Islamabad’s citizens, despite the city’s current demand for water being around 200 mg/d.
According to the 2017 census, Islamabad’s population has topped 2 million, which is about 2.5 times the number found in 1998.
According to a representative, “The implementation of mandatory recharge wells in housing units will not only replenish the depleted groundwater but also help manage urban flooding in the city.”
