CDA to Construct ‘Alexander Road’ Linking Islamabad with Haripur

ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is set to start work on the long-awaited Alexander Road, which will connect Islamabad to the Haripur area.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to inaugurate the project, as well as the freshly constructed Margalla Avenue.

According to the data, the road gets its name from Alexander Well, a notable well on the border between Islamabad and Haripur.

Although the route is generally known as Alexander route, an official name has yet to be determined.

The CDA has undertaken the required preparations for the inaugural ceremony, which will feature the newly constructed Margalla Avenue as well as the expanding and refurbishing of Shah Allah Ditta to Kenthla Road, according to sources.

The 7.5km road will extend up to the Kenthla area, with further links to the Haripur area possible.

According to a CDA engineer, this route would be built within Islamabad’s authority and will end near the Islamabad-Haripur border near Kenthla well.

On the other hand, the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is already building on a road that can be linked to ours to connect Islamabad and Haripur.

The road’s Notice Inviting Period (NIT) cost is estimated to be around Rs. 380 million, and the project is expected to be completed in four months.

There is currently a small road serving the local community, but the CDA aims to renovate it into a completely wider road.

The road’s expansion and renovation will help to promote tourism in the area, as the old Buddha Caves are close to Shah Allah Ditta.

While extending the road is necessary, no compromise on building construction requirements should be made, according to an official.

The official warned that if CDA guidelines are not strictly enforced, the existing greenery of Margalla Hills could be lost to uncontrolled development.

Furthermore, important individuals who own land along the route may seek to have development regulations relaxed.

In terms of money, an officer stated that the CDA will enlarge and reconstruct the road as part of a rural area development package.

The federal government has already sanctioned a Rs. 10 billion package for rural development initiatives.

The first phase of this package will see the start of development projects worth roughly Rs. 2.7 billion, including the aforementioned road.

According to the further specifics, the road will be 24 feet wide and built in the pattern of an existing road from the zoo to Monal.

Notably, the entire 7.5km route would go through Islamabad’s Zone III, specifically the Margalla Hills neighborhood.

The Environment Protection Agency (EIA) has not approved the project’s Environment Impact Assessment (EIA).

An EIA is not necessary for this project, according to a senior CDA officer, because it involves the upgrading and widening of an existing route.
