ChatGPT’s Performance is Getting Much Worse With Time
Recently, it has been unanticipatedly noticed that GPT-4’s performance is declining with time rather than improving. Though initially based solely on personal experiences, the general agreement regarding the reduction in the AI model’s response quality now has empirical backing.
Recent research has shown that, for several tasks, the June variant of GPT-4 performs noticeably worse than the March version. A series of 500 questions was provided to the model, asking it to determine whether a particular integer was prime.

The outcomes were alarming. The June model could only muster 12 correct answers, compared to the March model’s 488 precise solutions. This shows a sharp decline in accuracy from a stellar 97.6% to a pitiful 2.4%!
The scientists used the Chain-of-Thought technique to try and improve the model’s analytical capabilities. This involved instructing the model to perform simplified, step-by-step calculations to determine whether “17077” is a prime number. The output quality of the model is typically improved by using this technique. The modified GPT-4, however, was unable to produce these intermediary steps, which resulted in an inaccurate response of “No.”

Although it’s generally accepted that OpenAI releases updates frequently, it’s unclear exactly how they measure the model’s growth or decline. There is much speculation that OpenAI may be using multiple, more focused, and smaller GPT-4 models that do the same tasks as large models but at a lower operational cost. The system chooses the best model to handle a user’s request when they submit a query.
