Google is rolling out a useful update to Google Chrome’s Reading Mode on Android, making distraction-free reading easier, more consistent, and more user-friendly.
Reading Mode is designed to remove ads, pop-ups, and unnecessary elements from web pages, leaving behind clean, readable text. This makes long articles more comfortable to read on smaller screens and helps users stay focused.
Until now, one common complaint was that Reading Mode did not appear reliably while browsing on Chrome for Android, making it difficult to access when needed. Google appears to be fixing this issue with the latest update.
What’s changed in the updated Reading Mode
According to a report by 9to5Google, the revamped Reading Mode is rolling out with Chrome for Android version 143. Since the update is being released gradually, some users may not see the changes immediately.
The biggest improvement is visibility. Reading Mode now appears clearly as a dedicated option in Chrome’s three-dot menu, making it much easier to find and activate. Once turned on, users also get a clear visual indicator confirming that Reading Mode is active.
Better customization and smoother experience
The updated Reading Mode retains familiar customization options, including font style, text size, and color themes. These settings can be accessed by swiping up on the active page.
A major improvement is consistency. User preferences now stay applied across different articles, meaning readers no longer need to reset their font or theme every time they open a new page.
Why this update matters
While the update may seem minor, it significantly improves everyday usability. For users who frequently read news articles, blogs, or long-form content on their phones, Reading Mode becomes far more reliable and enjoyable.
As Chrome on Android continues to evolve, this refinement could encourage more users to take advantage of distraction-free reading and make mobile browsing more comfortable overall.
