The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has officially started construction on the main structure of the Mohmand Dam, marking a major milestone in the project’s development.
Before this phase, essential groundwork was completed, including river diversion, construction of coffer dams, excavation of dam foundations, and preparation of abutments. The Mohmand Dam is expected to be fully completed by 2027–2028.
To mark this progress, Federal Minister for Water Resources, Mian Muhammad Mueen Wattoo, visited the site along with WAPDA Chairman Lt Gen (Retd.) Sajjad Ghani and other key officials. During the visit, the minister toured critical construction zones, including the Diversion System, Power Intake Tunnel, Spillway, Power House, and the Main Dam.

The project team briefed the minister on ongoing work at 14 different locations within the site. He expressed satisfaction with the progress and reaffirmed the federal government’s support, highlighting the importance of the dam in meeting Pakistan’s growing water and electricity needs.
The Mohmand Dam, being built across the Swat River in the Mohmand Tribal District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, will be the 5th highest concrete-faced rockfill dam (CFRD) in the world, standing 213 meters tall.
Key features of the project include:
- Water storage capacity of 1.29 million acre-feet (MAF)
- Irrigation for 18,233 acres of new land and support for 160,000 acres of existing farmland
- 800 MW power generation capacity, providing 2.86 billion units of clean, low-cost electricity annually
- Flood protection for Peshawar, Charsadda, and Nowshera
- 300 million gallons per day of drinking water supply for Peshawar
The minister assured that the Ministry of Water Resources will continue supporting WAPDA to ensure the dam and other key projects are completed on time.
