Indian authorities are investigating a deadly car explosion in New Delhi under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the country’s main anti-terrorism law, according to local media reports on Tuesday. The blast took place near the historic Red Fort on Monday evening, killing at least eight people and injuring around 20 others.

Police registered the case under UAPA and are examining whether the incident is linked to terrorism or other coordinated activity. The explosion occurred when a slow-moving car stopped at a traffic signal and suddenly blew up around 7 p.m. Nearby vehicles were also damaged, and the blast scene showed wrecked cars and scattered debris along a busy road near a metro station in the old part of the city.

Home Minister Amit Shah said security agencies are looking at “all angles” and are expected to share findings soon. The blast is considered rare for New Delhi, a highly patrolled city with a population of over 30 million. Following the incident, several Indian states and key installations were placed on high alert.

The Red Fort, where the explosion occurred nearby, is one of India’s major landmarks. It attracts visitors throughout the year and is the site from which the prime minister delivers the annual Independence Day speech on August 15.

Authorities are now reviewing security arrangements in and around the capital as the investigation continues.
