The National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) has issued a travel advisory after dense fog forced the closure of several major motorways across Punjab and adjoining regions, disrupting intercity travel and raising safety concerns.
According to the latest update, motorway sections closed due to dangerously low visibility include M-2 from Thokar Niaz Baig to Chakri, M-3 from Faizpur to Rajana, M-4 from Pindi Bhattian to Shorkot, M-11 from Lahore to Sambrial, and M-14 from Kharpa to Isa Khel. NHMP officials said these closures were implemented as a precautionary measure as thick fog reduced visibility to unsafe levels, making driving extremely hazardous.
Dense winter fog is a recurring issue in Punjab and frequently leads to temporary shutdowns of key highways to prevent accidents. Traffic data from previous years shows that fog-related conditions contribute to a significant number of road mishaps, particularly during late-night and early-morning hours.
As of Thursday evening, the affected motorway sections remained closed, with authorities advising commuters to stay informed through official NHMP channels. Travelers have been urged to delay non-essential journeys, use alternative routes where possible, and prefer daytime travel when visibility typically improves.
Motorists have also been reminded to switch on fog lights, maintain safe speeds, keep adequate distance from other vehicles, and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions return to normal.
