Digital Wallets to Take Place of NADRA CNICs
Lahore: According to a January 31 news article, the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) is now transitioning Computerised National Identity Cards (NIC) into digital wallets as part of the government’s Digital Pakistan agenda.
According to NADRA Chairman Tariq Malik, the ‘Pak Identity’ smartphone app was launched to assist NIC candidates through an internet gateway. The application is compatible with iOS and Android smartphones.

According to the specifics, applicants will not need to visit the embassy or NADRA office to obtain an ID card because the software will be used for facial recognition, biometric fingerprinting, and document scanning on smartphones.
With the deployment of this software, he continued, Pakistan has become the first nation to use smartphone cameras for contactless biometric capture and verification. The NADRA Chairman disclosed the particulars of the digital wallet, stating that it will be a unique digital ID.
This innovation will alter the national identification system. The program will guarantee public convenience and obviate the need for conventional physical identification.

By offering remote identification and e-KYC (Electronic know your customer), the digital dividends of such technological innovation will benefit contactless banking, company efficiency, financial inclusion, and e-governance.
Reports indicate that 75,000 Pakistanis residing overseas have used the app to process their national identity cards, including two-factor authentication. As soon as testing is complete, the government will pursue a digital wallet. Later this year, the current application will be changed.
