Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson turned heads at the Venice International Film Festival, revealing a completely new look for his role in The Smashing Machine. In the film, Johnson takes on the part of real-life MMA and UFC legend Mark Kerr.
At 53, Johnson looked much slimmer than fans are used to seeing him, a big change from his usual action-hero build. The transformation was part of his deep preparation for the role. Directed and written by Benny Safdie, the movie tells the story of Kerr’s rise in the fighting world — and the personal struggles that nearly broke him.
For Johnson, the change wasn’t just physical.
“This transformation was something I was really hungry for,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’ve been lucky to make big movies, but there was a voice inside me saying, ‘What if I could push myself more?’ This role gave me that chance.”
Emotional premiere moment
Emily Blunt, who plays Kerr’s wife Dawn, joined Johnson on the red carpet. The premiere ended with an incredible 15-minute standing ovation. Johnson teared up as the audience applauded, while director Safdie dropped to his knees in gratitude. Kerr himself stood proudly with the cast, visibly moved by seeing his story on screen.
🔥🤣 Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is 100% Fine & Healthy LOL. Is the internet trying to make everyone sick this week?

Kerr’s reaction
After the screening, Kerr shared his feelings online, admitting he was still trying to process the moment.
“I am still in disbelief that this is real,” he wrote. “I’m so proud of the work DJ put into becoming The Smashing Machine. I feel nothing but gratitude and respect for the way my story was told.”
Johnson replied with affection: “Love you, brother. Your life changed mine.”
The Smashing Machine hits theaters on October 3, promising a raw and emotional look at Mark Kerr’s journey — from his UFC triumphs to the personal battles he fought outside the cage.
