In October, the nation’s power generation fell by 10.6 percent yearly to 9,572 gigawatt-hours (GWh). However, the first four months of the 2023–24 fiscal year saw a 3.7 percent YoY growth over the same period in the previous year.
Month over month (Mum), the nation’s electricity generation decreased by 28.2 percent from 13,339 GWh in September 2023.
In the meantime, the average fuel cost for electricity generation in October 2023 was Rs. 8.26 per unit, an 8.4% YoY decrease.
Hydel (32.5 percent), RLNG (20.3 percent), Nuclear (19.1 percent), and local coal (13.9 percent) were the top contributors in October 2023.

October 2023 had 3,114 GWh of hydrogen electricity generated, a 0.9 percent YoY decrease from October 2022’s 3,144 GWh. Hydel generation is down 37.8% on a month-over-month basis. From July to October of FY24, it increased by 9.9 percent yearly.
The amount of power generated by RLNGs increased by 5.2% YoY to 1,939 GWh in October 2023 from 1,844 GWh in the previous year, while it decreased by 8.9% Mum from 2,128 GWh in September 2023.
Nuclear power generation decreased 17.2 percent year over year to 1,826 GWh in October from 2,206 GWh in the same month the previous year. Every month, nuclear power generation decreased by 20.1 percent from 2,286 GWh recorded in the same month last year.
The electricity generated from coal rose by 168.6% YoY to 1,334 GWh in October 2023 from 497 GWh the previous year. The output of coal-based power decreased by 9.8% month-over-month from 1,479 GWh in September.
October 2023 saw 76 GWh of solar-based generation, a 3.9 percent YoY decrease from 79 GWh the previous year. It increased by 2.8% YoY to 314 GWh in 4MFY24 from 305 GWh in 4MFY23.
Fuel Cost
Fuel costs for power generation fell 8.4% YoY in October 2023 but increased 11.4% to an average of Rs. 8.26/unit. In October 2022 and September 2023, the average costs were Rs. 9.02 and Rs. 7.42/unit, respectively. Fuel prices for 4MFY24 are 19.1% lower year over year at an average cost of Rs. 8.07 per unit as opposed to Rs. 9.99 per unit in 4MFY23.
With a fuel cost of Rs. 38.7 per unit during the period under review, furnace oil was the most expensive fuel.
