EPD Asked to Speed up Wastewater Treatment
Lahore: The Environment Protection Department (EPD) has been tasked with coordinating with the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) and the Ravi Urban Development Authority (Ruda) to expedite the construction of wastewater treatment plants to prevent further contamination of groundwater.

During a meeting on Tuesday, Environment Secretary Zahid Hussain delivered the directives to the authorities.
The secretary instructed the officials to communicate with the management of Punjab Industrial Estate Management and Development in order to establish an effluent treatment plant in the Sundar Industrial Estate and Quaid-i-Azam Industrial Estate.
Major industrial clusters are located on Multan Road, Manga Mandi, Raiwind Road, Raiwind Road, Kattar Bund Road, Ferozepur Road, Hudiara Drain, Charrar Drain, Kahna Kacha Road, Farrukh Abbas Drain, and Shahdara, according to information presented at the conference.

The effluent from these industrial clusters is discharged into the river Ravi. In addition, untreated wastewater from eleven municipal drains is also discharged into the Ravi.
Wasa plans to construct five wastewater treatment plants as part of the Ravi Urban Development Project to supply the future planned metropolis with clean water.
