Keeping children properly dressed is essential during the colder months. Doctors advise covering the head, chest, and feet, as body heat is easily lost through these areas. Woollen caps, warm socks, and layered clothing help retain warmth. However, excessively heavy clothing should be avoided, as it can cause sweating and discomfort, increasing the risk of illness.

Experts also recommend avoiding cold water during winter. Bathing children with cold water or allowing them to wash their hands and face with it may lead to health issues. Instead, lukewarm water should be used. Low-quality candies and chocolates should be limited, as they can irritate the throat. Nutritious, home-cooked meals are considered the better option.

Pneumonia remains a serious concern for children during winter. Doctors warn that symptoms such as rapid breathing, chest retraction, high fever, and extreme weakness require immediate medical attention. Vaccination against pneumonia is strongly advised to prevent severe complications.

When children develop a fever, medical experts caution against giving antibiotics without a doctor’s advice. During fever, children should wear light clothing, have their temperature monitored regularly, and be given nourishing foods such as soup or broth. If the fever continues, parents should consult a healthcare professional.

Mild winter ailments like colds, coughs, and sore throats can often be managed with simple home remedies. These include ginger and honey tea, warm milk with dates or dried fruits, herbal teas made with ginger and jaggery, and fresh fruit juices, which can help support immunity and ease symptoms.

Gentle oil massages using mustard or olive oil, followed by brief exposure to sunlight, can help keep the body warm and reduce the risk of colds. Maintaining digestive health is also important, as experts note a link between constipation and respiratory problems. Light use of natural aids such as raisins, dried figs, or psyllium husk may support digestion.

Although winter care for children can be challenging, health professionals stress that with proper clothing, balanced nutrition, timely medical attention, and preventive measures, most seasonal illnesses can be avoided. They emphasize that prevention remains the most effective approach to protecting children’s health during winter.
