Fawad Chaudhary: PMDA to Fine TV Channels Up-to RS 250m
The Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Fawad Chaudhry, has stated that the proposed Pakistan Media Development Authority (PMDA) will be empowered to levy fines of up to Rs250 million on [TV channels], as opposed to the present maximum of Rs1 million allowed by existing laws.

In an interactive with digital broadcasters, Fawad stated that the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) was a wealthy organization, “yet since its inception, it has not spent a dime on journalist training, research, or digital media.”
The minister also announced the establishment of a media commission with four members each from government and media organizations, led by a chairperson. The commission will be able to designate individuals to the planned complaint committee and media tribunal.
Fawad stated that a new development wing had been established within the PMDA in order to improve the journalistic ability since “constant education” of news producers was a pressing need.

The minister of information believed that digital media would shape Pakistan’s media landscape in the future. “However, this does not imply that formal media will disappear; rather, communication channels will evolve. “Content will remain,” he added.
