CPEC Hydropower Project in Pakistan Becomes Functional
The Karot Hydropower Station, the first hydropower project within the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), has reached a new milestone as 95 percent of its construction has been finished.
The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a 3,000-kilometer-long path of infrastructure projects connecting the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China to the Gwadar Port in Pakistan’s Balochistan province.
In Punjab, the power plant is situated on the Jhelum River. With a capacity of 7,200 megawatts, it can produce over three billion kilowatt-hours of renewable energy annually.

In addition to providing work in Pakistan, it will supply cheaper electricity. China Three Gorges Corporation, a Chinese company, has invested $1.7 billion in the project.
Chinese media said that once completed, the hydropower project is estimated to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in Pakistan by 3.5 million tonnes per year. The project is anticipated to be finished by April 2022.
