A new citizenship law that will make it simpler for foreigners residing in Germany to become citizens has been passed by the German Federal Government.
According to SchengenVisaInfo, the new rule reduces the residency requirement from eight to five years and offers citizenship to children born in Germany provided at least one parent has resided there for five years.
The new rule is crucial for both global competition and Germany’s standing as a corporate site, according to Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, who expressed her appreciation for the decision.

The new citizenship law is the next crucial step in modernising Germany’s immigration laws, she said, adding that the qualified Immigration Act had already been passed. She emphasised the necessity of modern immigration law for Germany to attract and retain qualified people.
About 5.3 million of Germany’s 12 million foreign residents have lived there for at least ten years, according to the Interior Ministry.
This demonstrates how many people who call Germany home are unable to take part in and contribute to democracy on an equal footing.
Millions of people will be able to get German citizenship and benefit from its benefits according to the new law.
Key Points of the New Law
The following important clauses of the bill were emphasised by the interior ministry:
- To be eligible for naturalisation, a person must successfully integrate into society, have a strong command of the German language, and be able to support themselves on their own.
- Instead of the existing eight years of residency, citizenship will be awarded after five years.
- Those with exceptional employment performance or volunteer activity, strong German language skills, and financial independence will be eligible for naturalisation after three years.
- If at least one parent has been lawfully in Germany for more than five years, then all foreign parents who have children born in Germany will automatically get German citizenship.
- For visitors and contract workers who have made a remarkable contribution to Germany’s growth, the naturalisation exam will be eliminated.
In accordance with the legislation, everyone wishing to obtain a German passport must uphold the commitment to the free democratic system.
The new citizenship privileges will not be available to polygamous people or anyone who disdain gender equality. The government emphasized that in order to naturalize as a German citizen, a person must be able to support themselves and their family.
