A French man who set out for a routine doctor’s appointment ended up more than 1,000 miles away—in a country that doesn’t even border France—after taking a wrong turn.

The 85-year-old, from Châtillon-sur-Thouet in western France, reportedly had no memory or directional issues, but became so confused by his GPS that he drove past his nearby clinic and continued on a 1,500-kilometre journey into Croatia.

Originally, the man was supposed to travel just 12 miles to his appointment. When he didn’t return home after several hours, his family alerted the police and requested military assistance to track his mobile phone.

French authorities eventually traced his phone to a hotel in Croatia, nearly 932 miles from his home. It appears he drove for around 20 hours, passing through Italy before reaching the southern European country.

When asked how he ended up so far from home, the man reportedly said he couldn’t explain it and suggested that a GPS error was likely to blame.
