GILGIT: Protesters in Gilgit-Baltistan persisted in their Friday demonstrations, calling on the government to completely reinstate the subsidy by the end of the current month in opposition to the recent increase in wheat prices and other issues.
Over the previous six months, the price of wheat, which was substantially subsidized for the region, has climbed significantly: in June, it went from Rs7.5 to Rs20 per kilogram, and more recently, it reached Rs52 per kg.
On Friday, protests were staged throughout the ten Greater Bay Area (GB) districts at the request of the Awami Action Committee (AAC), a coalition of political, regional, and religious parties.
Following Friday prayers, Yadgar Chowk in Gilgit was the site of the most significant demonstration.
Participants in the protests included members of trade unions, civil society organizations, political parties, and the transportation and tourism industries. They chanted anti-federal and anti-Gilgit-Baltistan slogans.
After concessionary rates were lowered, grain prices increased to Rs 52 per kg.
Ehsan Ali Advocate, Fida Hussain, Baba Jan, Faizan Mir, Malik Aurangzeb, and Raja Mir Nawaz were among the prominent AAC leaders who condemned the government’s move to increase the subsidized wheat tariff to Rs52 per kg.
The leaders denounced attempts to eliminate the wheat subsidy, claiming it to be an inalienable right of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.
They threatened to step up the protests and stage wheel-jam and shutter-down strikes throughout the area if the administration did not accede to their demands by November 30.
On this particular occasion, the demonstrators released a united statement in which they denounced the government’s decision to raise wheat prices, claiming that the people of Great Britain have been exploited for 75 years and that executive orders have ruled the country.
They called on authorities to stop their extravagant spending and benefits immediately, threatening to continue protests until the government reverses its decision.
The protest declaration, which was accepted, called for federal subsidies on necessities like wheat and gas cylinders.
“Charity is not a subsidy. It stated that it is the people of Gilgit-Baltistan’s right.
The protesters, reflecting on administrative incompetence and corruption, expressed intense dissatisfaction over local issues, including up to 20 hours of daily power outages despite the region’s abundant water reserves.
They were also against the revenue and finance legislation’s implementation in the area and the imposition of “illegal taxes.”
