On Wednesday, Google disclosed it had filed a lawsuit against Microsoft in the EU with the European Commission, declaring that Microsoft is using “anti-competitive” licensing practices to push customers toward its Azure cloud service.

At a news conference, Amit Zavery, Google Cloud’s Vice President, said, “We believe this legal action is necessary to stop Microsoft’s vendor lock-in, allowing customers more choice and creating a fair competition landscape.”
It’s the Google vs. Microsoft situation, where Google claims that Microsoft has taken advantage of businesses’ dependence on essential software like Windows Server to pressure them into using Azure. They claim that Microsoft’s legal case has made it very costly for customers to use Windows Server or other products on contesting platforms like Google Cloud or Amazon AWS, marking up prices by 400%.
In a blog post co-written by Tara Brady, president of Google Cloud’s Europe region, Zavery presented that Microsoft’s licensing terms prevent European customers from moving their workloads to other cloud services, even though there are no technical motives to do so. For those who still choose rival platforms despite the high costs, Google claims that Microsoft has added limitations in recent years, such as restricting security updates and creating compatibility issues.
