Google is working on a major upgrade for its Gemini Live experience by adding Google Maps integration directly into the camera viewfinder. The feature, discovered in hidden code by Android Authority, will let users point their phone at streets, shops, or landmarks and instantly see details like business names, ratings, and reviews appear on the screen.
The upgrade combines real-time Google Maps data with Gemini Live’s AI-powered conversation abilities. This means users will not only see information about what’s around them but can also ask natural questions about it. For example, pointing a camera at a restaurant could instantly show reviews while Gemini Live answers questions about its opening hours or menu.
The system is still in early testing but already shows working features. In addition to on-screen overlays, users can request details in audio mode, though that currently requires asking about specific locations.
This development is being seen as a step toward smart glasses integration. With the possibility of Samsung and other companies launching new smart glasses, the ability to display floating information cards in real time could change how people navigate cities and interact with their surroundings.
Google recently previewed visual guidance for Gemini Live at the Pixel 10 launch, showing AI highlighting useful objects in the camera’s field of view. The new Google Maps-powered overlay builds on that vision, signaling a future where AI and augmented reality work seamlessly together for practical use in daily life.
