Google responds to Gmail hack concerns with major statement

Google has pushed back against online rumors suggesting Gmail was hit by a major security breach, reassuring its 2.5 billion users that no such threat exists.

In a statement on Monday, the company said recent reports claiming it had issued a broad security warning were “completely false.”

Rumors tied to old phishing attack
The confusion seems to have resurfaced from earlier coverage of a phishing campaign first reported in June. That attack involved a compromised Salesforce system connected to Google. The company said it completed notifying all affected users by August 8.

No new breach, but phishing persists
Google stressed that Gmail is not facing a widespread threat, though phishing scams remain a constant risk.

“Phishers are always looking for ways to infiltrate inboxes, but our systems block more than 99.9% of phishing and malware attempts before they reach users,” the company said.

Staying protected
To strengthen security, Google urged users to enable passkeys or other password alternatives.

The clarification shows how quickly misinformation about cybersecurity can spread — and why strong login practices remain essential for keeping accounts safe.
