Google is rolling out one of the most significant updates to Google Translate in years by integrating it with its Gemini AI model, promising more natural translations, real-time audio translation, and enhanced language learning tools.
The company announced that Gemini-powered capabilities are being added to Google Translate to greatly improve how the service understands and translates nuanced language, including idioms, slang, and region-specific expressions. Google said the upgrade sets a new benchmark for translation accuracy across its ecosystem.
The enhanced translations are now live on Google Search and the Google Translate app for both Android and iOS. The rollout has started in the United States and India, with support for English and nearly 20 other languages, including Spanish, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, and German.
As part of the update, Google is also introducing live audio translation through headphones. This new beta feature allows users to hear real-time translations while preserving tone, emphasis, and natural speech flow, making conversations feel more human. Users can access the feature by opening the Translate app, connecting headphones, and tapping the “Live translate” option.
The live translation beta is currently available on Android devices in the US, Mexico, and India, supporting more than 70 languages at launch. Google confirmed that the feature will expand to additional regions and is expected to arrive on iOS in 2026.
Alongside translation improvements, Google has upgraded language learning tools within Translate. Users will now receive more accurate feedback during speaking practice, along with personalized tips to improve pronunciation and fluency. A new streak-tracking feature has also been added, allowing learners to monitor consecutive days of practice to stay motivated.
These learning features are expanding to nearly 20 additional countries and regions, including Germany, India, Sweden, and Taiwan, as Google continues to position Translate not just as a translation tool, but also as a comprehensive language learning companion.
