Government Favors Plan to Fight Child Stunting
Islamabad: A five-year plan has been adopted by the federal government to lower stunting among children under the age of five in 67 districts nationwide. However, half of the Rs 312 billion plan’s expenditure would go into paying salaries.

The Planning Commission highlighted major concerns about the Tackling Malnutrition Induced Stunting’s effectiveness in its technical appraisal, describing it as a “short-term remedy, not sustainable, and expensive.”
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) was advised to give additional attention to the Tackling Malnutrition Induced Stunting in Pakistan – July 2021-June 2026 initiative by the Central Development Working Party (CDWP).

The project’s overarching objective is to essentially eradicate stunting in children born in 2023 by 2030 and to drastically reduce malnutrition-induced stunting in children over the following five years.
The province governments would contribute Rs 150 billion to be used for wages, while the federal government would spend Rs 162 billion to purchase nutrition sachets. These salaries are already being paid to the female health professionals by the federating units.
According to the top commission official, the CDWP approved the proposal after consulting with recognised health professionals, who praise the sachets approach as efficient.
