Government Intends to Name Road in Capital
Twenty-one years after his assassination, the federal government plans to name a street in Islamabad after Afghan commander Ahmed Shah Massoud.

According to sources within the federal government, the Agency of Foreign Affairs recently discussed the concept with the Ministry of Interior, the ministry responsible for the Capital Development Authority (CDA).
According to the sources, Ahmed Wali Massoud, the brother of the late Afghan leader, requested that a boulevard in Islamabad be named after Ahmed Shah Massoud in February of this year. The request was accepted for consideration by the prime minister.
In a subsequent official letter, the foreign secretary requested that the interior ministry obtain CDA’s advice before forwarding a summary to the prime minister for final approval.
According to the reports, numerous states have recognised Ahmed Shah Masooud’s service to Afghanistan. Last year, France presented him with a plaque in Paris, and on September 9, 2020, San Diego will celebrate Ahmed Shah Massoud Day.

Upon being contacted, Naveed Ilahi, a member of the CDA’s planning department, stated that, according to the current policy, highways and streets may only be named after foreign heads of state.
