The Ministries of Finance and Energy have suggested consolidating capacity payments due over the next 3-5 years and paying them in advance. This strategy aims to reduce the power tariff by Rs. 5 per unit. To facilitate this, the Finance Division would first arrange the necessary funds and then transfer them to the Ministry of Energy for distribution to IPPs.
The plan is currently awaiting approval from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has been briefed on the proposed reduction plan, but no final decision has been made yet. Both ministries have been working together for the past week to finalize a strategy to reduce electricity rates promptly.
