Under the new pro-rata billing system, the government has ordered that reduced tariffs be applied to extra units billed. Consumers in the shielded category will see their rates drop to 13 rupees per unit from the previous 27 rupees per unit.
Excess charges will be credited to consumers’ current bills, and any overpaid amounts will be refunded. Additionally, NEPRA has eliminated fines for late payments.
This decision follows an investigation by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) into last month’s billing practices, which found missing reading dates on bills and insufficient explanations from Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO). In response, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended the deadline for bill payments by 10 days to alleviate financial pressure on the public. The Power Division has directed all power distribution companies, including K-Electric, to apply this extension to the July and August 2024 bills.
