In FY 2024–2025, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) collected Rs. 490 billion in general sales tax (GST) and withholding tax (WHT) from energy bills, compared to Rs. 600 billion the year before.
This occurred as consumer power consumption decreased by 3.6 percent from 83,109 GWh in July–March of FY24 to 80,111 GWh in FY25.
In FY25, industrial power consumption was 21,082 GWh, a significant decrease from 28,830 GWh in FY24.
Crucially, tax income from salaried people increased from Rs. 367 billion in FY25 to Rs. 552 billion in FY25.
Sections 236C and 236K of the Income Tax Ordinance allowed the FBR to collect Rs. 235 billion on real estate transactions.
Compared to FY24’s 90 billion and 104 billion, respectively, this comprises Rs. 118 billion from 236C and Rs. 117 billion from 236K.
In FY25, the FBR collected a total of Rs. 5.8 trillion in direct taxes. While the banking industry alone paid between Rs. 1 and Rs. 1.5 trillion in income and withholding taxes, the corporate sector made a contribution of Rs. 3.8 trillion.
