To help reduce the spiralling circular debt in the power industry, the interim administration on Wednesday revealed new measures to reduce power theft.
In a press conference today, acting Energy Minister Mohammad Ali and acting Information Minister Murtaza Solangi announced that authorities are beginning a crackdown on electricity theft. In this context, he stated that the Electricity Theft Act, under which power thieves will be prosecuted in special courts, has begun to take shape.

Ali bemoaned the fact that consumers must pay for electricity theft. He stated that electricity rates cannot be decreased unless power theft is eliminated in response to consumer complaints about their recent rising power bills.
The interim minister stated that the government plans to reduce electricity theft by Rs. 589 billion and that the Electricity Act will be moved in 1-2 weeks for prompt implementation. According to the available information, he said, the government would punish thieves, and officers of distribution businesses participating in this would also face consequences. The Election Commission of Pakistan has been given a list of the involved officers in order to have them removed from their positions immediately, he continued.

The IMF’s strict conditions for a short-term $3 billion bailout package have prevented competent authorities from taking any action in the face of widespread protests against rising electricity rates.
Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, the caretaker prime minister, pertinently stated on Monday that the government would crack down on electricity theft. He stated that no exceptions should be made in the fight against electrical defaulters and power thieves and directed at the time swift action against those who were behind on their electricity bills in cooperation with the provinces and law enforcement agencies.
