The government would once again start the bidding process for the financially troubled Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), Privatization Minister Abdul Aleem Khan assured the Senate Standing Committee on Privatization on Monday. The prime minister is also committed to seeing that PIA is privatized, the minister informed the committee meeting, adding that the airline can profit.

As an example, the minister mentioned Air India, which was privatized following several unsuccessful attempts. Additionally, he accused the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) of being involved in the privatization process. He said that it disagreed with the removal of the general sales tax (GST) on the acquisition of new aircraft.
Addressing the occasion, Secretary Privatization added that since the majority of the work was finished during the last bidding procedure, this time around the process will be much shorter.
The federal government is working on a new proposal to privatize the financially troubled national flag airline. According to media reports last week, the government is aiming to sell PIA to either Abu Dhabi or Qatar through a government-to-government arrangement.
