According to a hacking collective thought to be associated with Iran, it has 100 terabytes of emails purportedly taken from senior Trump associates and advisors.

The outfit, which went under the alias “Robert,” stated that it might sell the data but gave no details about its ambitions or the files’ contents. During the 2024 campaign season, the group sent out small batches of emails to reporters.

The emails were obtained from a number of high-profile individuals in Trump’s inner circle, including White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, lawyer Lindsey Halligan, Trump associate Roger Stone, and adult film actress-turned-critic Stormy Daniels, according to “Robert,” who made this allegation in an online interview with Reuters over the weekend.

FBI Director Kash Patel issued a warning that any breach of national security will be looked into and prosecuted “to the fullest extent of the law,” while US Attorney General Pam Bondi denounced the cyberattack as “unconscionable.”

The scope of the breach has not yet been formally confirmed by the White House or the FBI. Neither the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) nor the people listed responded to requests for comment. The UN envoy from Iran likewise chose not to reply. Iran has repeatedly denied any role in cyberespionage operations.

Some previously released material, such as an email purportedly demonstrating a financial arrangement between Trump and lawyers for Democratic presidential nominee Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is currently Trump’s Health Secretary, was independently confirmed, according to Reuters.

Internal campaign messages about Republican candidates and conversations about Stormy Daniels’ lawsuit settlements were among the other leaks, according to reports.

Despite garnering media attention last year, analysts claimed that the revelations had little effect on the election, which saw Trump win a second term in power.

The US Department of Justice accused Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps with planning the Robert operation in September 2024. Regarding charges, the group has remained silent.

Activity resumed last month after a 12-day military escalation between Israel and Iran that culminated in US strikes against Iranian nuclear sites, despite “Robert” having earlier stated in May that he had “retired.”

In updated communications, the gang encouraged Reuters to “broadcast this matter” and stated that it was getting ready to sell the stolen email cache.

The operation may be a component of a larger Iranian response to recent conflicts, according to Frederick Kagan, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. He stated that everyone has probably been told to employ all of their asymmetrical weapons without inciting significant military action from the US or Israel. “Email leaks are included in that category.”

According to US officials, Iran’s hackers were largely idle during the recent battle, despite concerns that they may launch more aggressive cyberattacks. Nonetheless, US cyber defense organizations warned Monday that Iranian hackers would still target US infrastructure and companies.
