ISLAMABAD, April 17 — A powerful hailstorm struck Islamabad and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) on Wednesday afternoon, causing significant damage to property, vehicles, and infrastructure, while also leading to widespread power outages and travel disruptions.
Hailstorm Causes Chaos in Islamabad
The storm, which lasted for around 35 minutes, was most intense in areas such as Tarnol, where large hailstones shattered windshields, damaged solar panels, and uprooted trees. Several roads were blocked due to fallen branches, leading to traffic congestion and difficulty in emergency response operations.

Many residents were caught unprepared, with children seen seeking shelter in public parks. The sudden shift in weather offered temporary relief from the heat but left many struggling with property damage.
Power Outages and Emergency Response
The storm led to prolonged power outages in several sectors of Islamabad. District administration teams initiated immediate restoration efforts, focusing on clearing debris, draining waterlogged roads, and restoring electricity.
A spokesperson from the Deputy Commissioner’s office confirmed that damage assessments are underway and teams are working to ensure smooth traffic flow in affected areas.
KP Braces for Further Impact
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issued a statement saying it is closely monitoring the situation. Director General Asfandyar Khattak noted that emergency teams are on high alert, particularly in flood-prone districts such as Landikotal and Mardan.
The PDMA’s Emergency Response Centre remains operational 24/7, and citizens have been urged to use the helpline for immediate assistance.
Tragedy in Diamer: Flash Flood Claims a Life
In a heartbreaking incident in Chilas, Diamer district, two children were swept away by flash floods triggered by the storm. One child succumbed to injuries while en route to the hospital, and the other was referred to Islamabad for further treatment.
Climate Change Blamed for Extreme Weather
Political leaders and environmental experts, including Senator Sherry Rehman, attributed the storm to increasing climate volatility linked to global warming and fossil fuel emissions. She emphasized the urgent need to address human-induced climate change to prevent further weather-related disasters.
Weather Forecast and Upcoming Alerts
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had forecasted thunderstorms, gusty winds, and rainfall across northern Pakistan. Similar weather conditions are expected to persist from April 18 to 20, with residents advised to remain cautious and follow official advisories.
Sports Event Disrupted by Rain
Although the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium did not experience hail, the scheduled PSL match between Islamabad United and Multan Sultans was affected due to a wet outfield. The pitch was covered as a precautionary measure, as confirmed by on-ground reporters.
