After weeks of speculation, Hyderabad have confirmed Australian batter Marnus Labuschagne as their direct signing ahead of the Pakistan Super League player auction, a decision that has surprised many fans.
Labuschagne is best known as a mainstay of Australia’s Test and ODI sides rather than a proven T20 specialist. His international T20 profile is limited, with just one T20I appearance dating back to 2022, making the move unusual in a league where franchises often favour established short-format stars for direct signings.
That said, the choice is not without merit. While he has not featured extensively in major T20 leagues, Labuschagne has shown he can deliver impact performances when given a clear role. In September 2025, he led his club, Redlands, to a KFC T20 Max title in Queensland, a run that included a century and even a hat-trick, a reminder of his all-round capabilities.
His most recent outing in the 2025/26 Big Bash League with Brisbane Heat was relatively quiet, featuring limited appearances and modest returns. Still, Hyderabad appears to be backing his wider skill set: his ability to rotate strike under pressure, read conditions, contribute as an elite fielder, and offer part-time leg-spin as a tactical option.
Labuschagne may not fit the classic “power-hitting T20 superstar” mould, but his adaptability and game awareness make him a different kind of selection. If he settles quickly, the move could look inspired; if not, it may draw scrutiny in a league built on explosive starts and high strike rates.
Hyderabad are expected to reveal more about their new franchise identity on February 7 at Niaz Stadium, including the official team name, logo, kit, and further squad announcements.
