The apartment building immortalised by the hit American sitcom Friends has been sold for a staggering $32.7 million, once again capturing the attention of fans worldwide who associate it with one of television’s most beloved shows.
The six-storey property, located at 90 Bedford Street, became instantly recognisable after appearing in the show’s exterior establishing shots when Friends first aired in 1994. While no interior scenes were filmed there, the façade became synonymous with the fictional home of Monica, Rachel, Joey, and Chandler, with Ross and Phoebe completing the iconic group.
The series starred Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer, and Lisa Kudrow, turning the building into a lasting pop culture landmark.
Over the years, it has remained a must-visit spot for tourists in New York, many of whom stop to take photos at the famous corner tied to the long-running sitcom.
Details of the property
The building comprises 21 residential units, ranging from one- to four-bedroom apartments. Its ground-floor retail space is currently occupied by Little Owl, a popular Mediterranean restaurant that has become part of the site’s charm and appeal.
The property last changed hands in February 2024, when Wharton Properties, led by Jeff Sutton, purchased it for $18.25 million. After the acquisition, several apartments were renovated, significantly boosting the building’s value in a relatively short time.
Who bought the ‘Friends’ building?
The latest buyer is JP Real Estate Group Limited, described as an international investor. The off-market transaction was brokered by Baseline Real Estate Advisors, with Michael Sherman handling the deal, according to reports.
For fans dreaming of living in the famous Friends building, that fantasy may have to wait. According to StreetEasy, none of the apartments are currently available for rent, despite the continued interest driven by the show’s enduring legacy.
