Importance of M-1 Motorway With its Nearby Housing Societies
One of Pakistan’s most significant and frequently travelled highways is the M-1, or the Islamabad-Peshawar highway. The M-1 highway links Peshawar to Islamabad and Rawalpindi along with a number of additional routes.
When Nawaz Sharif was in office in 1997, the M-1 highway project was originally started, and the Turkish firm Bayindar was awarded the contract. When the administration changed later, the motorway project was also put on hold. After then, Parvez Pervez Musharraf was elected president of the nation, and the development work on the M-1 motorway resumed in 1999 after a very long hiatus.

With a budget of Rs. 13 billion, the M-1 motorway was built and made accessible to the general public in October 2007. It covers an area of 155 km (96 mi), of which 67 km (42 mi) are in Punjab and 88 km (55 mi) are in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The M-1 begins on the Ring Road in Peshawar.
Following the eastern route from the cities of Charsadda, Risalpur, Swabi, and Rashakai, it then crosses the Kabul River. The M-1 leaves Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and enters Punjab province via Attock, Burhan, and Hasan Abdal. The M-1, which is the M-2’s extension, comes to an end not far from Islamabad.
The M-1 also has six lanes, each of which has a rest area along the way. The Hazara highway (E-35), Islamabad, AWT/ Sanjiani/ Paswal, Burma Bhatar, Burhan (Hassan Abadal/ Kamra), Ghazi, Chachh, Sawabi, Rashakai, Charsadda, the Peshawar Northern Bypass, and the Peshawar Ring Road are among the 14 interchanges on the highway. The Brahma Bahtar-Yarik Motorway follows Dera Ismail Khan to Brahma Bahtar Interchange.
The M-1 highway also has 18 flyovers, 27 small bridges, 137 underpasses, 571 culverts, and three significant bridges that cross the Haro, Indus, and Kabul rivers. There are 10 service stations alongside the road, five on each side of the highway.
For Pakistan’s transport system, the M-1 Motorway is of utmost significance. It provides an essential connection between the country’s capital, Islamabad, and Peshawar, one of the biggest cities in the northwest. The M-1 motorway is a popular option for long-distance travel because it has improved connection, cut down on travel time, and increased road safety.
