Khan has maintained his reluctance to seek exile or soften his criticism of the military, demonstrating his commitment to political engagement in Pakistan. According to analysts, Khan’s strained relationship with the military is still a major barrier to his path to power.
International pressure on Pakistan’s government increased when the UN recently called his arrest “arbitrary” and called for his immediate release. His supporters see Khan as a symbol of resistance against alleged military-political intrusion.
According to a defense attorney, former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned for over a year in a graft case, his appeal for release was denied by a Pakistani court on Thursday.
Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were accused of keeping and selling official gifts when he was in charge, and the court judgment was an additional blow for them.
The pair will be formally charged in the upcoming court hearing on November 18. Bibi and Khan have denied the accusations, claiming they had nothing to do with the illegal conduct.
